How to play 2048
With every move, all the tiles on the board slide together in the direction you choose: use the arrow keys, the W, A, S, D keys or swipe on the screen. After each move, a new 2 tile (or now and then a 4) appears in an empty spot.
When two tiles with the same number touch, they merge into one tile worth double: 2 + 2 makes 4, 4 + 4 makes 8 and so on. Every merge adds the new tile’s value to your score.
The goal is to reach the 2048 tile. After that you can keep playing to beat your best score. The game ends when the board fills up and no merges are left — if you slip up, the “Undo” button takes back your last move.
Frequently asked questions
What’s the best strategy to win 2048?
Pick a corner and always keep your biggest tile in it, building a row in descending order next to it. Avoid swiping away from that corner, because that knocks the big tile out of place.
What happens after I reach 2048?
You win the game, but you can tap “Keep going” and keep merging tiles to reach 4096 or 8192 and rack up more points.
Can I play 2048 on my phone?
Yes. Just swipe up, down, left or right on the board. It works in your browser, with nothing to install.
