How to play chess online
Choose whether to play the computer or another person, your color, the level and, if you want, a clock. White moves first. Tap a piece (or drag it) and the dots show where it can go; tap the destination to move.
Each piece moves differently: a pawn advances one square (two on its first move) and captures diagonally; a rook moves in straight lines, a bishop diagonally, a queen in both ways, a knight in an “L” shape (jumping over other pieces) and a king one square in any direction. Everything from official chess is here: castling, en passant and pawn promotion, where you pick the piece.
The goal is checkmate: attack the enemy king so it has no way to escape. A game can also end in a draw by stalemate, threefold repetition, the 50-move rule or insufficient material. The move list beside the board records every move in algebraic notation.
Frequently asked questions
Can I play chess online against the computer for free?
Yes. The computer has 5 levels: at beginner it makes mistakes on purpose, and at strong it calculates several moves ahead. Everything runs in your browser, with no sign-up and nothing to download.
How do I castle?
Tap the king and then the square two spaces toward the rook, or drag the king onto the rook itself. Castling is only allowed if the king and rook have not moved, the squares between them are empty, and the king is not in check or passing through an attacked square.
Can I play with a friend on the same phone?
Yes. Choose “2 players” and pass the device after each move. The flip board button helps keep each side’s pieces facing the right way, and the optional clock makes the game more exciting.
