How to play Reversi

The board has 8×8 squares and starts with 4 discs in the center, two black and two white. Black moves first, and each player places one disc of their color at a time.

Every move must surround enemy discs: in a straight line, horizontally, vertically or diagonally, between the new disc and another of your discs. All surrounded discs flip to your color, in several directions at once. The dots on the board show where you can play.

If you have no legal move, you pass. The game ends when nobody can move, and the player with more discs of their color on the board wins.

Frequently asked questions

Are Reversi and Othello the same game?

Yes. Othello is the trademarked name of a commercial version of Reversi. The rules you play here are the same: an 8×8 board, 4 discs crossed in the center to start and black moving first.

What is a good strategy in Reversi?

Taking the corners is gold, because a disc in a corner can never be flipped. Avoid playing on the squares next to the corners while they are empty, and in the middlegame prefer moves that flip few discs and leave your opponent with few options.

How do the computer levels work?

On easy the computer only looks at the current move and sometimes makes mistakes on purpose. On medium it thinks a few moves ahead, and on hard it calculates much further and plays the endgame perfectly. The Undo button takes back your last move.
