How to play Samurai Sudoku

A Samurai Sudoku is made of five 9×9 grids: one in the center and four in the corners. The center grid shares one 3×3 box with each corner grid, so those cells count for two puzzles at once.

Every grid follows the usual rules: fill each row, column and 3×3 box with the numbers 1 to 9 without repeating any. Tap a cell and then a number below the board, or type 1–9 on your keyboard and move around with the arrow keys.

The shared boxes are the key: a number you find in one grid often unlocks the one next to it. Turn on Notes (or press N) to pencil in candidates, keep “Show conflicts” on to spot repeats in red, and use Undo or a Hint when you get stuck.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a Samurai Sudoku take?

Roughly as long as four or five regular sudokus. Easy puzzles take most players 20 to 40 minutes, while hard ones can run past an hour. The timer pauses automatically when you switch tabs.

Do I have to solve the grids in a particular order?

No, you can start anywhere. Most players begin with the grid that has the most givens and use the shared corner boxes to work their way into the neighbors.

Does every Samurai Sudoku have only one solution?

Yes. Each puzzle is checked by a solver before it shows up, so there is exactly one answer and you can reach it with pure logic, no guessing.
