Spit Card Game

A real-time race against the computer: clear your five stockpiles onto the spit piles, shout “Spit!” when you’re stuck and be the first to slap the smaller pile.

You against the computer, in real time. Clear your stockpiles and slap the smaller pile!

Computer speed:

Tap a stockpile to play its top card. Keyboard: 1–5 picks a stockpile, ← / → plays (or slaps) the left or right pile, Space shouts Spit!, P pauses.

How to play Spit

The deck is split in half. Each player lays out 5 stockpiles of 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 cards with only the top card face up; the rest of your cards become your spit pile. Both players flip a card from their spit pile into the middle to start the two center piles.

There are no turns. Play the top card of any stockpile onto either center pile if it is one rank higher or lower, whatever the suit (Ace and King connect). When a face-down card is uncovered it turns over, and if one of your five spaces is empty you can move a top card into it to uncover another. When nobody can play, press “Spit!” and both players flip a new card from their spit pile.

As soon as someone clears all five stockpiles, both players race to slap the smaller center pile: whoever slaps it keeps that pile and the other player takes the bigger one. Everyone shuffles their cards and deals a new round. If you clear your stockpiles with no spit pile left, you win the game.

Frequently asked questions

What’s the difference between Spit and Speed?

In Speed you hold a 5-card hand and refill it from a draw pile. In Spit your cards are laid out in five stockpiles, and each round ends with a race to slap the smaller center pile, so the game is played over several rounds.

What happens if I slap the bigger pile?

You keep the pile you slapped, so slapping the bigger one by mistake leaves you with more cards for the next round. Look before you slap!

Are there other versions of the Spit rules?

Yes. Some players don’t let Aces and Kings connect, some allow stacking cards of the same rank on your own stockpiles, and in some versions a player with no spit pile plays onto a single center pile. Here we use the most common rules.
