How to play Futoshiki

On a 5×5 grid use the numbers 1 to 5 (on a 7×7 grid, 1 to 7). Each number appears exactly once in every row and every column.

Some neighbouring cells have an inequality sign between them. The point always faces the smaller number: in “3 > ?”, the right cell must be 1 or 2. The vertical arrows (∧ and ∨) work the same way, top to bottom.

Tap a cell and choose a number on the pad or type it. Numbers that are already printed are fixed. Use Notes for candidates, Check to spot mistakes and Hint when you are stuck.

Frequently asked questions

What does Futoshiki mean?

In Japanese, “futōshiki” means “inequality”. It says it all: the main clues are the greater-than and less-than signs between cells.

What is a good way to start?

Look for chains of signs. If three cells read a < b < c, the first cannot be the largest number and the last cannot be 1 or 2. A cell that is greater than another is never 1; a cell that is smaller is never the maximum.

Does every Futoshiki here have a single solution?

Yes. Each grid is generated in your browser and a solver confirms there is only one answer, so you can always solve it with pure logic.
