Hearts Online

The classic trick-taking game where nobody wants hearts: play against 3 computer opponents and finish with the fewest points.

You’re playing against 3 computer opponents. Lowest score wins!

How to play Hearts

There are 4 players with 13 cards each. At the start of each hand you pick 3 cards to pass: to the left, to the right, across the table and, on the fourth hand, nobody passes.

Whoever has the 2 of clubs leads first. You must follow the suit that was led; if you can’t, you can play any card. The highest card of the suit led wins the trick and leads the next one. Hearts can’t be led until someone has already discarded a heart.

Each heart is worth 1 point and the Queen of Spades is worth 13. If you take every heart and the Queen, you “shoot the moon”: you get 0 and everyone else gets 26. Once someone goes over 100 points, the player with the lowest score wins.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the same Hearts that came with Windows?

Yes. Hearts became famous as one of the classic Windows card games, and the rules here are the same as that classic version, now free to play in your browser.

Which cards should I pass at the start?

It’s usually smart to pass the Queen, King and Ace of Spades and your high hearts, and to keep low cards, which help you avoid winning tricks.

What does shooting the moon mean?

It means taking all 13 hearts and the Queen of Spades in the same hand. Instead of you getting 26 points, each opponent gets 26.
