How to play Nonograms

The numbers next to each row and above each column tell you the length of the blocks of filled cells, in order. “3 1”, for example, means a block of 3 cells in a row, at least one empty cell, then a block of 1. A “0” means the line has no filled cells at all.

Click or tap to fill a cell, and drag to fill several cells at once along a row or column. Use X mode (or the right mouse button) to mark cells you know are empty: it helps a lot on big grids. Clues you’ve already satisfied fade out, and the row and column under the cursor are highlighted.

Start with the lines that have big numbers: on a 10×10 grid, an “8” clue forces you to fill the 6 middle cells, no matter where the block starts. If you get stuck, ask for a hint or check for mistakes. When you finish, the picture appears and your time becomes the best for that size.

Frequently asked questions

Is a nonogram the same as Picross?

Yes. Nonogram, Picross, Griddlers and paint by numbers logic puzzles are all names for the same Japanese puzzle, created in the late 1980s.

Do the nonograms here always have a solution?

Always. A picture is only used if our solver can finish it line by line without guessing. That guarantees there’s exactly one answer and that you can reach it with reasoning alone.

What size should I start with?

A 5×5 takes a minute or two and is perfect for learning. 10×10 is the classic size; 15×15 and 20×20 take more patience and constant use of X mode.
