Gin Rummy Online

Classic two-player Gin Rummy right in your browser: draw, discard, build melds and knock before the computer does. Your hand arranges itself and shows how much deadwood you still have.

You play against the computer. Build melds and knock with 10 or less deadwood. First to 100 points wins!

How to play Gin Rummy

Each player gets 10 cards and one card is turned face up to start the discard pile. On your turn, draw a card from the stock or take the top card of the discard pile, then discard one. The goal is to group your cards into melds: sets of 3 or 4 cards of the same rank (three 8s, for example) or runs of 3 or more cards in the same suit (5-6-7 of hearts). Aces are always low.

Cards that aren’t part of any meld are your deadwood: face cards count 10, Aces count 1 and the rest are worth their number. Once your deadwood adds up to 10 or less, you can knock when you discard. If you have no deadwood at all, that’s Gin. Tap cards to select them and use “Meld” to lock in a meld your own way.

The player who knocks lays down their hand, and the opponent can lay off their loose cards on the knocker’s melds. The knocker scores the difference in deadwood. Going Gin earns a 25-point bonus and nobody can lay off. If the opponent ends up with equal or less deadwood, it’s an undercut: they score the difference plus 25. First to 100 points wins.

Frequently asked questions

Should I knock right away or wait for Gin?

Early in a hand, knocking with low deadwood usually pays off because your opponent still has lots of loose cards. Later on they’re close to done, and knocking with 8 or 10 points makes an undercut much more likely.

Can I pick up the discard and throw it right back?

No. A card you just took from the discard pile has to stay in your hand at least until your next turn. Keep in mind that taking from the discard pile also tells your opponent what you’re collecting.

Are there other Gin Rummy rules?

Yes. Some tables give a bonus for each hand won and 100 points to whoever wins the game, or allow “Big Gin” with all 11 cards melded. Here we use the most common rules: knock with 10 or less, Gin and undercut worth 25, game to 100. If the stock gets down to 2 cards and nobody has knocked, the hand is a draw.
